In the third year, students who entered the program without an M.A. in philosophy are required to take 4 elective graduate seminars P/NP in the Department of Philosophy at Northwestern University. Students who enter the department with an M.A. are required to take 2 such seminars. Students are not permitted to enroll in a course for which they serve as a TA.

*This supersedes the requirement that was in place through 2019-2020. It will apply to students who enter the Ph.D. program in 2020 or thereafter. For students that entered the program in AY 2019-20 or before, those that entered without an M.A. in philosophy are required to take 6 elective graduate seminars P/NP in the Department of Philosophy at Northwestern University during their third year. Students who entered the department with an M.A. are not required to take any graduate seminars during their third year.

In addition, third-year students will participate in the Dissertation Research Seminar.

In the third year, all students are required to complete the dissertation prospectus and oral defense no later than May 31.

By the fourth year, students will have completed the Department’s coursework, skills, and logic requirements and is expected to qualify.

*Students in their third and fourth years, must register for PHIL 590 or TGS 500 for the number of units necessary for fulfill full-time enrollment in order to satisfy the summer funding requirement.
