About the Department

The Philosophy Department at Northwestern aims to educate undergraduates in many of the main areas of philosophy, and it offers a wide variety of courses from which to choose. It has special strengths in Ancient Philosophy, Epistemology and Metaphysics, Ethics and Political Philosophy, European Philosophy, and Philosophy of Mind and Language. We have programmatic connections to various departments and programs, including Cognitive Science, German, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, and Religious Studies. We have a vibrant undergraduate major, with recent graduates having gone on to pursue careers in such things as law, education, business, public policy non-profit, medicine, and academics. We also have a flourishing graduate program, and our recent PhDs have been placed in excellent jobs at colleges and universities across the country and beyond.
